Mactv
Today, German Mac-TV released their great review of Idonext. Editor Sven Listing explains the Web App and the iPhone App and also gives useful hints and shortcuts. A wonderful review especially for new users who like to watch a guided tour (in German). You can watch the video at Mac-TV for 1.99 EUR or you can subscribe to their weekly show (plus huge archive) for 4.99 EUR per month.

We are still blown away to see "our baby" so enthusiastically presented!

Wed, 13 Oct 2010 02:04:00 -0700 Idonext Mobile 1.0.0 adds Notes, Task Counter & More http://blog.idonext.com/idonext-mobile-100-adds-notes-task-counter-mo http://blog.idonext.com/idonext-mobile-100-adds-notes-task-counter-mo

Taskcounter

The new version 1.0.0 of the iPhone App Idonext Mobile adds the most frequently requested features:

  • NOTES:
Add longer texts to a task. It has the same function like adding of a linefeed at the Web App.
  • TASK COUNTER:
See already at the App’s home screen how many things you have to do today or tomorrow!
  • iOS4 BACKGROUND SUPPORT:
If you resume the app from the background the task lists are automatically refreshed. You can initiate this refresh also manually by shaking your device.

Unfortunately, we also learned today that Apple has changed the way Push Notifications are handled. We just could see learn about that behaviour on a productive/live app. As a result, the activation/registration for push of new users does currently not work and the user will see a warning-popup. Existing users who are just upgrading the app should not be affected by this issue because their device was already activated before.

We already sent an update which fixes that activation issue to the AppStore and it should be available around the 20th of October. So we have a major release with mixed feelings...

Today, we added the two most requested features:

  1. the option to delete all done items
  2. the keyboard-shortcut CTRL+S as alternative to a click on the "Save"-Button

Both new features are now available at the Web App and the "delete all done items"-feature will be added to the next update of Idonext Mobile, too.

Fri, 20 Aug 2010 07:30:00 -0700 New: Create Tasks via E-Mail http://blog.idonext.com/new-create-tasks-via-e-mail http://blog.idonext.com/new-create-tasks-via-e-mail

Today we are introducing Mail2Task - the possibility to create tasks via e-mail. That’s especially helpful if you are using an e-mail-friendly device like a Blackberry or if you prefer to use Apple’s Notes app on your iPhone/iPad to instantly get things out of your head. Data export or data migration can be another reason to use Mail2Task.

We tried to come up with the most simple and time-saving solution and you just need to know these 3 Golden Rules:

  1. Send your e-mail to memaail@gmail.com@idonextmemail@gmail.com.com from the address you are registered at Idonext

  2. The subject holds the date for all tasks in the e-mail. Various formats are valid, like "11/10/2010", "10.11.2010", "0" (for today), "2" (for in 2 days) or "3 weeks" (for in 3 weeks). An empty subject means "Someday". If the subject is empty then you can assign a date to each task separately by adding the "+"-shortcut at the end of each task’s text.

  3. Each task is separated by a single line break and can contain tags and the "+"-shortcut. A double line break marks the end of the tasks’ list. Everything after that is ignored by Mail2Task (perfect for signatures!).

Some minutes after sending you will get an automatic confirmation e-mail stating the number of recognized tasks. Please check the pictures of this blog post to see some examples. Have much fun with that time-saver!

Thu, 19 Aug 2010 07:30:00 -0700 Towards the iPad - Mission #1 Accomplished http://blog.idonext.com/towards-the-ipad-mission-1-accomplished http://blog.idonext.com/towards-the-ipad-mission-1-accomplished

Ipad-web-home
These days, we focus on our new "Idonext for iPad"-program and already finished the first step: the capability to use the Idonext web frontend on the iPad. That sounds more obvious than it actually is, because the iPad (and the iPhone) are touch devices and we had to re-write most mouse-oriented code to become "finger-oriented". For geeks: we had to change the Javascript click/mouse events to Apple’s new touch events. We also optimized the layout for the dimensions of the iPad so that everything fits perfectly on the screen without resizing.

While testing we also learned that the iPad’s browser Mobile Safari is far slower than the "normal" Desktop-Safari and it’s maybe due to an older codebase. Anyway, that means that the overall performance of the Web App can be slower if you have many tasks on the screen. But Apple will surely update Mobile Safari soon to fix that.

Especially for the iPad (and iPhone) we increased the size of the buttons and added the shortcut ",," (2 comma) which does the same magic task-splitting like "--" (2 hyphens) does. Try to enter the text "task1,,task2,,task3" and tap "Save" and you will see what I mean! A real time-saver!

These are the next steps for getting Idonext on the iPad:

Step 2 (coming very soon): the iPhone app "Idonext Mobile" runs on the iPad (in zoom mode).

Step 3 (coming soon): the iPad gets an own Idonext app which perfectly uses the devices capabilities in graphics & handling!

Stay excited & happy tapping!

We added a small, but very convenient feature to the Idonext service & mobile platform, called over-night badging. You surely know, Idonext Mobile’s app icon has a badge which shows the total of due things. Now, this badge is automatically updated when your day changes, even if your app is not open! This badge icon update is done over the air with a non-visible push notification. Hope you enjoy it!

The last two weeks we spent all our energy, sweat and coffee pads in turning Idonext into a global-ready system. The localization of Idonext and its frontends is vital for us and so we made the support for foreign languages more flexible and efficient. As proof of work we already added German as the first foreign language. More languages will follow!

Since last weekend you can download Idonext Mobile 0.5.0 from the App Store. That update adds some graphics to the app’s home screen and more importantly adds a badge to the app’s icon. You see now the total of things you want to do today everytime you switch on your phone.

The next update, called 0.6.0, is already on its way to the App Store, will be a major update and should be available for download within the next 10 days.

Thu, 01 Jul 2010 02:18:00 -0700 Idonext Mobile 0.4.0 released http://blog.idonext.com/idonext-mobile-040-released http://blog.idonext.com/idonext-mobile-040-released

It’s a milestone release since we are adding a very important feature: alarm (aka: reminder). You can now select an alarm for things which have a start time. The alarm can be an e-mail or an Apple Push Notification sent directly onto the iPhone/iPod touch/iPad.

But unfortunately, we learned some hours ago, that push seems not always to work on this version. At least on our development and private iPhones. The issue could not be foreseen since it is an App Store-specific bug. During development push worked great on our test devices.

Anyway, we already fixed that issue and sent another update to Apple for approval. The new version will be 0.4.1 and should be available for download during the next week. Sorry folks!

But the current version 0.4.0 has besides the alarm feature and many bugfixes two more new features. The first one is offline caching. That means that you can see your things even if you are offline! Cached data are displayed semi-transparent and are updated on every list call. The second feature is that friend-adding now also works for subscribers of our free plan. They can now receive things by friends who subscribed to a plan which allows sharing & assigning of things. That’s a great collab feature, especially for mobile devices.

I will inform on every new update and keep fingers crossed that 0.4.1 is soon approved by Apple. From our test devices I know that push notification is really a killer feature - it’s a pitty that it seems not to work in the current App Store version ...

Alarm1
I am happy to announce a great new feature: alarm notifications! Every thing (task, event, idea...) which comes with a start time can now have an alarm assigned. Currently, you can set e-mail as alarm option. Soon we will add another, even more helpful alarm option which I am already using night & day in our latest development version of Idonext Mobile.  But at first, how do you set an alarm?

Alarm in Idonext Web

Just enter a time value in the start time input field and a new alarm bell icon will fade in. When you click this icon, you can set your alarm option and how many minutes before the event you get the alarm. So simple it is, just 2 mouse clicks. And once you empty your start time, the alarm icon and options will fade out to not disturb your eyes anymore.

Alarm in Idonext Mobile

Mobile users need to wait for the next update (0.4.0) of the software at the iTunes Store / App Store to be able to set alarms. Best is to follow this blog or our Twitter account to not miss its release. And as I said, there will be another, even more mighty alarm feature coming!

Wed, 16 Jun 2010 23:21:00 -0700 Status Report http://blog.idonext.com/status-report-23 http://blog.idonext.com/status-report-23

Last week we worked night and day to finish the release version of Idonext Mobile, aka Idonext for iPhone. At Friday we finally sent it to Apple for review and expect it to be online at the App Store later this or next week. In the meantime, we already worked on the next Idonext Mobile version which is now far better than the release version. It’s too bad that Apple has this review period delay. But anyway, I will proudly announce once the app becomes available for download.

We also improved the performance of the backend (the service itself) which makes the usage even more convenient. Since days, I have a new design for the website in mind (I know, it’s already new) and we are also planning to port Idonext Mobile to more devices. Idonext Mobile will introduce a slightly new logo and color scheme, so don’t be surprised :-)

Mon, 07 Jun 2010 09:32:00 -0700 Revised Plans http://blog.idonext.com/revised-plans-0 http://blog.idonext.com/revised-plans-0

With the upcoming iPhone app, we updated and rethought our plans. The plans are now devided by the offering of collaboration. And vital points are now available in every plan. For example, we learned while beta-testing the iPhone app how essential it is. So we decided to give the iPhone app for free to all plans.

And since the collaboration features are so mighty and unique, we decided to exclusively reserve them for our paid plans. But the paid plans offer even more cool stuff, like SSL and file-sharing and an unlimited amount of tasks and are really worth a try.

Pingdom_may
As wise men say: celebrate small victories whenever you can. So we use today’s e-mail by web-monitoring service Pingdom for a small celebration: idonext.com as service and website was up every minute of the month of May! And the global average response time were very good 246 ms.

Folks who architect the web, like programmers of sys admins, know how hard it is to keep a fast growing web service reliably running even under heavy load. So, grab your party hats and keep on moving! ...and better keep the hats close to you, since we will soon have something really big to celebrate.

Tue, 25 May 2010 01:28:00 -0700 Time-Saver: Put Date and Time in the Title http://blog.idonext.com/time-saver-put-date-and-time-in-the-title http://blog.idonext.com/time-saver-put-date-and-time-in-the-title

I think the "computer-user world" is devided into 2 groups: mouse-lovers and keyboard-lovers. The one group likes to point and click and the other group likes to hack text in a text-field as fast as possible. I count myself more to the keyboard group when I am on my Macbook. But once I am on my iPhone I am more then click/tap guy and hate text entries.

So we designed Idonext to satisfy both groups and the date, time and tags input-fields can be overwritten just with some some magic characters during the title input. Here is a short overview of today’s shortcuts:

  • #xyz means: add tag "xyz" to the task
  • abc--xyz means: split the task into one called  "abc" and another one called "xyz"
  • +2 weeks means: set the date due in 2 weeks from today on

Especially the last one (the "+") is really mighty and understands a lot of format and even real human language. Please keep in mind that the plus does not necessarily mean "add" but is just a magic char. Here are just some examples which should give you an idea. Try it for yourself!

  • +t = today
  • +today
  • +tomorrow
  • +1 = tomorrow (a digit stands for days)
  • +1 day = tomorrow
  • +5 weeks
  • +06/28/10
  • +28.06.10
  • +28.08.2010
  • +06/28/10 10:00-11:40
  • +06/28/10 1000-1140
  • +2 1000-1140 = in 2 days at 10:00

You can also combine tag and date/time shortcuts, but the date/time shortcut should be always the last. Like in "Meeting Steve #meetings +2 weeks 9:00-11:00".

As you see, we take the efficiency business really serious! Save time wherever, whenever you can.
